We had our one-on-one interview with the director of the film, Direk Enzo Williams; Captain James Whirlwind Salazar, captain who spearheaded Gerald’s military training for the film; and Gerald Anderson, the protagonist of the film AWOL.

What are your takeaways in this film?

Captain Salazar: “The movie will show the human side of a soldier. Through this movie makikita natin ang sundalo pag tinanggal ang uniform nya.

Gerald: “Coming from a military family, and coming into this film, I am very much excited.

Direk also came from a family of soldiers. And the film is just actually in perfect timing because of what is happening in Mindanao.

Did you ever consider getting into a military force?

Direk: Actually I signed with the US Army Reserve after 911 bombing. My mom just begged me not to do it.

What will be the impact of this movie in the military?

Gerald: “Because of what is happening in Mindanao, with Marawi and everything, it will be high morale.”

Captain Salazar: “On a military perspective, nakikita ko yung people’s support. Mas naaappreciate na ng taumbayan yung ginagawa ng men in uniform. It’s a good opportunity to further boost that, yung nasimulan ng momentum na yon.

What is the most difficult part on making this film?

Direk Enzo: “Story wise, it’s hard to justify breaking the law, in a way, every father would do the same kung pamilya mo na ang gustong patayin.”

“AWOL” stars Gerald as Lt. Abel Ibarra who, armed with his tactical knowledge and deadly skills, goes on a quest to protect his family from the man who masterminded the attempt on his life and his loved ones.
